Prose – The Enemy Within

– The Enemy Within –

Once again I find myself
staring down into the void
that brings me to my knees.
That void is my greatest enemy,
a beast which stares back at me
from that depth into which I fall so easily.

I sleep away the length of days,
trapped within the space
that serves to nurture me,
trapped within a sense of self
that continues to convince me
that to be nurtured is a crime,
that any care I may show myself
would bring down the wrath
of those who had placed upon me
the weight of their own mistakes.

Now long dead and gone,
I have survived beyond them all.
I feel no shame for the darkness which ails me;
that shame exists solely for its capacity
to keep me spiralling downward,
to keep feeding the enemy within me.
