– Moirai (The Fates) –
Sometimes in my haste to live,
I forget to breathe,
I forget the beauty
of the human world around me.
I slow my pulse,
inhale the music of the city;
The sound of laughter,
the languages of loving,
the stories of people living.
An old woman sits on a bench
at the pier by the lakeside;
A vision of my future,
looking back at me into her past.
A mother passes with her ward in tow;
She smiles,
reliving the moments of romance
which brought her joy into life.
And I the rebellious child,
becoming a woman in my own age,
sitting at edge of the pier,
dangling my feet over the open water,
as I watch the waves cross over each other,
back lit in black by the setting sun,
slipping away from me like time.
Time remains an ever faithful friend,
as much as it can be my enemy;
It isn’t so much that I have grown up,
only that I have remembered who I was
before the threads of this life
had so deeply entangled me.
