– Spectrum –
Red was the first colour that I knew as a child;
the colour of anger,
the colour of love and the colour of blood.
It was the colour imprinted
upon my earliest memory,
that memory of violence
which carried me in my formative years.
Orange was the colour of the summer sunrise
that cast across my open window,
gently waking me each morning
from my scattered sleep and darker dreams.
Yellow was the colour of the noonday sun,
brighter than what I could look upon
with my uncovered eyes,
casting shadows through the trees
in which I played my games
of fantasy and make believe.
Green was the gilding of those trees,
the bars of the cage that was my home,
with freedom to roam the open lands around me,
yet with restrictions on my movements so tightly controlled
that I often felt unable to leave my bed.
Blue was the colour of those days
on which I could not rise out of the sorrow,
the days in which I felt trapped by time and place,
and my bed became the only space
in which I could find peace of mind.
Purple was the colour of my heart,
the colour of my perseverance and my hope
that I would someday find my way to a place
where the full spectrum of my life could take hold.
